Multiple monitors vs one huge?
January 14, 2006 on 10:41 am | In TechnologyMonitors keep getting bigger. Part of this is based on the continuing rise in the use of Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) technology. Because of both how the technology works, and the space these monitors take up in volume, they are capable of larger consumer-marketable sizes like even flat-tube CRT monitors.
Case in point is this LG behemoth.
But I personally don't like them. At least for gaming.
I operate two different CPUs with two CRTs on each. My primary gaming rig uses two 19" flat-tube CRTs, slightly older models, but still performing better than any equivalent LCD screens I could afford.
I prefer this setup because the computer treats the monitors discretely. I can be immersed within a game world on one monitor while having a web browser, some Yahoo Widgets, and occasionally Instant Message in the other. And more and more games are coming with the option to play in a borderless window, facilitating better ALT-TAB functionality, with only a slight performance hit (barely noticable in games that work well in the first place).
Conversely, large-size LCD monitors are still mostly a single monitor. That means the game is going to, at best, be featured in a borderless window while directly next to them is the other stuff I want to see.
The separate monitors give me better separation. My primary display is front-and-center while the secondary is off to the right.
Someday I would like to test a large-size LCD on my current rig to see if it would work for me. But for now, I'm sort of skeptical.
I'd love to hear testimonials from those who play this way though.
Edit: I eventually broke down and bought a Dell 20.1" Widescreen and have loved it ever since.![]()
