World of Warcraft is a huge success. That much is certain. Even now, as more veterans talk of boredom and grinds and using the same language they used half a decade ago when complaining about Everquest, it cannot be denied that WoW has, more than any other title before it, brought the entire genre into the public eye. MMOGs are not yet mass market hits, as even with WoW, they still account for a mere single-digit percentage of all online games played.

Fraction though it is, the success of WoW (and more recently, Guild Wars) has resulted in a massive influx of new players has more than doubled the total number of folks in the genre. And this has not escaped notice of the mass media, itself driving awareness on an order of magnitude no mere advertisement campaign could itself.

But what happens when these people get bored with WoW?

Good things for the genre. Because there is life beyond WoW.

John Romero goes MMO

According to this article at CVG (which I first read about at F13), John Romero has become co-founder of a "complete secret, stealth company", and will be developing an MMOG "very different from any other MMO for some special reasons". Their development budget looks to far exceed the $10 million he stated as being used for Gauntlet.

He was very cagey when asked questions, so that's all there is in the article. Everything else is speculation.
