In what has become a two part discussion, Raph has outlined some thoughts are what he feels are the basics of design. He defines four parts, how they interact, and as usual, the conversation that follows is as interesting as the original post.

But it reminded me of a thought I had awhile ago, something related to the role I think I have in my own career. It seems a propos now, and I finally outlined it in a reply there (and expanded below).
