Reverse-projected Games

Ok, so I did have time for one more entry before leaving.
I was perusing this month's issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly and I came across a previously overlooked entry about a new EyeToy game, yet more proof that I seem to have missed half of E3.
This one intrigued me though because I saw what amounts to a working prototype at the Boston Science Museum a few months back.
Gone fission again

Ah fun times ahead. Take my folks, my own family, my sister's equally sized family, my other sister's feeling of hugeness with her first pregnancy, her husband and a rented house on a Golf course that is not yet open and spread it over eight days. Yep, our annual family pilgrimage is on again, starting, well, in about an hour. Unfortunately, we're going to be heading through areas in the Northeast wracked by rain and resultant flooding, and the forecast for the week isn't looking to be any different from what it has been for the past few. Wish me luck! I'm bringing the laptop (house wi-fi ftw!) but only to see how strong I am in resisting the temptation of getting online. I've even set a nice 11-day skill to be trained in Eve so I have no reason to even log on. I'll let you know how it goes

Eve Newsletter VIII arrived this past Monday.
I found some of the information pretty interesting.
Ingame Advertising and the Future of MMOs

Through an ongoing series tracking the rise of ingame advertising in MMOs (now with Huxley), I had originally thought the trend was to attempt to integrate ingame advertising into games that seemed to have low market potential or are having declinig market success.
However, now I'm wondering if the realities of delivering these games may compel a shift in the sorts of games we play at all, as a way to make ingame advertising successful.
SWG- Emulators and ‘Insiders’

Perusing the headlines at slashdot yesterday, I come across an article that almost made me fall out of my chair:

On Census: Part 2

Given the popularity of Final Fantasy XI, I've long wondered how much of the playerbase was playing in Japan vs the U.S.
I think there might be some insights available. And other data being reported potentially unlocks even more discussion, thus making this part 2 of a series I didn't even know I was starting.
Missing the obvious?

Gamasutra has an article up about the data mining Valve has been doing through their Steam service.
While the article is called "Steam Stats Surprise Over Episodic Content", there's something else I found more curious.
All eyes on Louisiana…
June 23, 2006 on 9:26 am | In General Gaming, Industry2 Comments
…well, ok, not really. But I did find it rather coincidental that on the heals of the ESRB getting tough comes news of Louisiana passing a bill that puts into law much of what Jack Thompson has been calling for.
I decided to hold off for a few days before commenting though because I was pretty sure the sort of Bill this was would be contested before it was activated.
Turns out I was right (of course, as were a lot of other people too)
MMOG Magazine #3- Followup
June 20, 2006 on 4:39 pm | In General Gaming, Reporting, Industry2 Comments
Over at Grimwell, SirBruce posted the launch of the MMOG Magazine #3 website. Having talked about this back in March, I had some further thoughts on whether there was actually any need for an MMOG Magazine for a publisher to fill.
I think I may have something.
Player Politicians
June 20, 2006 on 11:27 am | In General Gaming, Playstyles, Innovation2 Comments
Building off of Character Accountability to seek a more massive solution, I've been wondering about empowered player politicians and policing.
History shows us though that player policing is not a consistently reliable method for the total playerbase to be kept in line. I would extend this into thinking the same about player politicians/governors, given the consistency I've seen in ruling bodies of large guilds and other forms of player organizations.
However, there could be a hybrid solution. As with everything, this has probably been tried before. But old ideas are not bad ideas by default.
