The big news about the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion is that the raiding group sizes is changing.

And in my opinion, it's for the better.

Not sure who else is following Tabula Rasa, but I like what they're trying to do, both now and what they designed for previously.

But one thing I just got concerned with is the minimum system specs, as posted on Stratics:

Open PvP against RMT? Nah.

Lum recently talks about what other places have been talking about: the Archlord non-subscription plan. Within the comments thread that followed, some have brought up the perennial "solution": Open PvP.

Personally, I don't consider that much of a solution.

It's all about the motivations of the participants.

The new dot.com: RMT

With the rise of corporate-backed RMTing in games like Space Cowboy, Archlord and even Everquest 2's trade-enabled servers, I've beginning to see some parallels to the dot.com bubble of years back.

And I don't think this'll turn out any different.

Out of touch: Archive.org

For someone who likes to dig way back into the earliest history of MMORPGs, I'd have thought I'd have come across Archive.org long ago. That was not the case. And worse, I found out about it from a print magazine. So much for being online.

In any case, the Wayback Machine feature at the site is so very wonderful. Have a page you just knew existed years ago but which is now broken (like, the WinXP tweaks site Blackviper.com)? Throw the URL into that text box there and be presented with a list of links pointing to snapshots of the site on specific days. It doesn't seem to follow links very deeply, but I am just beginning to look at what they archive and how.

Could be an interesting problem for folks who want to have pages forgotten and went so far as to ask Google to de-list them. Yet another example of revisionist historians butting up against modern tech :)

Updated Links Page (again)

I've said this before, but I need to say it again. I love Wordpress. Anyone struggling with a blog spending half their time trying to fight CSS stylesheets or worse, HTML code, needs to move over to something like this. Spend all that time writing!

Anyway, over time I've completely reformatted my Links page, something I never really did in the last iteration of this place. If anyone has any comments on it, please feel free to tell me about it here. I am specifically looking for any game recommendations to add to the longterm radar sections, because, you know, ya just can't have enougn MMORPG!

The changing ‘Journalist’

In discussing the sensationalist news of E3's doom (which has since become a more level-headed topic), Tullux prompts a different discussion, mostly about the nature of journalism.

I disagree with their assertion that the Internet has merely expanded traditional journalism.
